The “Nippon! Nippon!” (日本！日本！) chant is one of the most powerful and unifying sounds in Japanese baseball — a rhythmic, two-syllable call that transforms thousands of individual spectators into a single, roaring wave of national pride. Unlike the spontaneous encouragement of “Faito!” or the momentum-building drive of “Sā! Ikō!”, “Nippon! Nippon!” is a declaration of identity — a moment when fans transcend team loyalties and become one voice representing an entire nation.

The chant is used almost exclusively during international tournaments — the World Baseball Classic (WBC), Premier 12, and other competitions where Samurai Japan takes the field against foreign opponents. It is the sound of a crowd saying, “We are Japan. We are one. We are here to win.”

The word “Nippon” itself carries special significance. While “Nihon” is the more common pronunciation used in everyday Japanese, “Nippon” is the preferred pronunciation in international sports competitions. The “Nippon! Nippon!” chant has transcended baseball. It is heard at football matches during the World Cup, at rugby games, and at any international sporting event where Japan competes. During the 2011 Asian Cup football final, fans chanted “Nippon! Nippon!” as Japan defeated Australia 1-0 to lift the trophy. In the 2022 World Cup, fans erupted into rapturous chants of “Nippon!
